PLANT CARE'S GIANT LITTER SHELTER

Although recycling offers more environmental benefits than any other waste management option, recycling plants are not always popular neighbours – especially if litter from the plant is being carried by the wind to neighbouring areas.

This was the problem faced by Berryman Glass, the UK’s leading glass recycler, at its plant in South Kirkby, West Yorkshire. The solution was provided by Leicestershire-based Plant Care Ltd.

To contain the wind-blown litter Plant Care designed and erected a massive litter shelter to surround and cover the 1,430 square metre open area of the recycling plant.

The shelter stands 6.5m metres high to allow easy passage for HGVs. It consists of a frame of pressure-treated timber support posts, bedded in firm foundations, covered with a high tensile extruded litter fence netting. The 35mm x 20mm aperture of the netting contains any wind blown litter or particles, but still allows natural light into the site.

“The most difficult part of the construction was creating the netting roof for the litter shelter,” explained Tim Sly, Plant Care’s Marketing Director. “To allow free access for heavy traffic, we could use only a small number of roof support posts. However, we came up with the right answers and as a result Berryman has a litter containment shelter that achieves its objectives comprehensively.”

Plant Care Limited started business as a specialist supplier to horticulture and agriculture but its particular expertise in windbreak fencing has attracted clients from a range of other industries, including mining, civils, construction and, of course, recycling.

“We now have the products and expertise to meet the needs of any industry requiring lightweight windbreak or particle containment fencing or structures,” said Tim Sly.
